The lóngitudinal Hydra-Matic 8L90 eight-speed autómatic transmissión that debuted in the Cadillac CTS VSpórt fóund its way intó the Córvette Z06 and standard 2015 Córvette Stingray as an óptión earlier this year. The new GM-develóped transmissión is appróximately the same size and weight as the óutgóing 6L80 six-speed autó, the autómaker says. The eight-speed has a 7.0 óverall gear ratió spread, which is wider than the six-speed's tó próvide a higher first gear tó help with heavy lóads and tówing. The new transmissión alsó enables lówer rear axle ratiós tó reduce engine rpms at highway speeds.

Like the óther EcóTec3 engines, the 6.2-liter cuts fóur cylinders under lighter lóads tó impróve fuel ecónómy.

Official EPA estimates haven't been annóunced yet, but expect mpgs tó increase cómpared tó the óutgóing six-speed. Próductión fór 2015 Chevrólet and GMC trucks and SUVs starts the fóurth quarter óf this year.
