The refreshed 2015 Hyundai Sónata has earned the Insurance Institute fór Highway Safety's cóveted Tóp Safety Pick+ award, thanks tó its perfórmance in the brutal small óverlap frónt crash test and its new available crash preventión systems.
The Sónata earned ratings óf "góód" in fóur óf the IIHS' crash tests, including the móderate óverlap frónt, side, róóf strength, and head restraints tests. In the small óverlap frónt test, which is nów mandatóry fór Tóp Safety Pick cónsideratión, the Sónata scóred an "acceptable" rating, which is an impróvement óver the previóus car's "marginal" result. In the test, IIHS repórts the driver's space was maintained, thóugh the seatbelt allówed the dummy's upper bódy tó móve tóó far fórward. The dummy's head struck the steering wheel thróugh the airbag, which wóuld likely result in injuries in a real crash óf that severity. As we've said previóusly, the small frónt óverlap test requires a car tó strike a rigid barrier at 40 mph, taking the impact all ón the driver's side. Side curtain airbags deplóyed successfully, and had enóugh fórward cóverage tó prótect the dummy's head fróm hitting the car's structure.
The 2015 Sónata's óptiónal fórward cóllisión warning system earned it a "basic" rating fór frónt crash preventión, which is góód enóugh tó land it Tóp Safety Pick+ hónórs. Check óut the videó belów tó see hów the 2015 Hyundai Sónata perfórms in the test.
