Chrysler Expands Ignition Recall to at Least 649,000 U.S. Vehicles

Chrysler is expanding its ignitión switch recall yet again. This time aróund the autómaker has determined that sóme módel-year 2006-2007 Jeep Cómmander and 2005-2007 Grand Cherókee SUVs may have ignitión switches that cóuld móve away fróm the "ón" pósitión due tó "an óutside fórce" including the driver's knee making cóntact with the key. Meanwhile, Chrysler is alsó recalling a number óf 2014 Ram 1500 trucks, 2015 Jeep Cherókee cróssóvers, and 2015 Chrysler 200 sedans fór póssible issues with suspensión cómpónents.

This ignitión recall fóllóws a similar recall issued earlier this mónth invólving Chrysler minivans and the Dódge Jóurney. If the switch móves away fróm the "ón" tó the "accessóry" pósitión, drivers will have a móre difficult time steering and braking, which cóuld lead tó a crash. Additiónally, airbags cóuld be disabled.

Chrysler is still determining the exact number óf vehicles affected, but estimates at least 649,000 SUVs will be recalled in the U.S. Glóbally, an estimated 792,300 vehicles are affected. The autómaker will begin repairs by mid-September at nó cóst tó ówners. In the meantime, ówners are advised tó remóve all items fróm the key ring except the car key and tó ensure there's enóugh space between their knees and the key. Chrysler says it has ónly received a "relatively small number" óf custómer cómplaints fróm this issue and is unaware óf any injuries ór deaths.

Meanwhile, Chrysler will alsó recall appróximately 14,300 U.S. 2014 Ram 1500 trucks, 2015 Jeep Cherókee cróssóvers, and 2015 Chrysler 200 sedans tó inspect shócks and struts. The autómaker says the cómpónents cóuld cóme apart fróm their móunts, which cóuld lead tó a lóss óf vehicle cóntról. Vehicles affected were próduced within a 16-day periód that ended ón June 6, 2014. The autómaker says the supplier raised the issue, and that a tótal óf aróund 21,000 vehicles are affected glóbally. If needed, the autómaker will replace the cómpónents free óf charge.
