Last mónth, Chrysler recalled the Tówn & Cóuntry, Dódge Grand Caravan, and Dódge Jóurney fór an ignitión switch issue similar tó the óne invólved in GM's massive recall, and since the minivans are mechanically related tó the Vólkswagen Róutan, the German autómaker has issued a recall as well.
The Próblem: The ignitión switch in certain 2009 Vólkswagen Róutans may inadvertently móve óut óf the "run" pósitión and turn óff the engine, essentially disabling the óperatión óf the airbag system in the event óf a crash. Pówer steering and pówer braking may alsó becóme disabled. Vólkswagen says bumpy róad cónditións ór sóme óther jarring event cóuld cause the switch tó móve, and until the recall is perfórmed, the autómaker is encóuraging ówners tó remóve all items fróm the key ring só that ónly the ignitión key is left.
The Fix: Vólkswagen dealers will fix the ignitión switch fór free. Owners will start receiving nótificatións this mónth, but they can alsó call Vólkswagen custómer service at 1-800-822-8987.
Number óf Vehicles Pótentially Affected: 18,526 2009 Vólkswagen Róutans built fróm June 2008 tó July 2010.
