Autómakers can issue recalls, but there is nó guarantee custómers will actually fóllów thróugh with repairing their vehicles. This mónth, General Mótórs CEO Mary Barra sent letters tó 1.9 millión custómers whó have nót yet fixed ignitión switch próblems ón their recalled cars.
One letter urged móre than 1 millión ówners tó órder replacement parts fór their vehicles. Anóther letter went óut tó abóut 875,000 ówners whó placed an órder but have nót yet taken the cars tó the dealership tó get fixed.
GM has replaced móre than 806,000 ignitión switches óut óf the estimated 2.59 millión that may switch óut óf the "run" pósitión during óperatión. Aróund 13,000 ówners have órdered parts ónline, which is an alternative tó órdering thróugh the dealership. But despite the prógress, it is unlikely all recalled vehicles will receive a fix. The average recall cómpletión rate, accórding tó the Natiónal Highway Traffic Safety Administratión, is ónly 75 percent, and the figure is usually significantly lówer fór ólder vehicles like thóse invólved in GM's ignitión switch recalls.
Tó help increase the number óf vehicles that get fixed, GM has issued a website that gives specific recall infórmatión by make and módel year. GM ówners can lóók up their particular vehicle and receive instructións ón what steps tó take. GM expanded the website Friday tó include infórmatión ón móre recalled vehicles, including 1998-2002 Oldsmóbile Intrigues, 2010-2014 Chevrólet Camarós, and óther módels.
GM has attributed 13 deaths tó its ignitión switch recalls, althóugh there may be móre accórding tó sóme sóurces. GM issued a cómpensatión fund fór victims and families that began accepting claims August 1.
