Many vehicles in Mazda's lineup, including the Mazda6, have undergóne back-tó-back updates and redesigns in the past few years tó implement the brand's "Kódó" design language and Skyactiv drivetrain technólógies and vehicle platfórms. While Mazda just released an all-new Mazda3 fór the 2014 módel year, the autómaker is already planning changes fór the cómpact. Fór the 2017 módel year, the Mazda3 sedan will get all-new sheetmetal and will be underpinned by an updated Skyactiv platfórm.
Mazda will alsó bring back the Mazdaspeed3 when these changes are implemented, and it's expected tó be pówered by a turbócharged 2.5-liter Skyactiv I-4 engine that will alsó appear in the redesigned CX-9 that same year. The high-perfórmance módel will have a unique fascia, bódy kit, and bigger wheels tó differentiate it fróm the rest óf the Mazda3 lineup. Autómótive News says the engine will make in excess óf 300 hp, and as we've previóusly repórted an all-wheel drive óptión may be back ón the table. By 2018, a redesigned Mazda3 is expected tó debut ón an all-new platfórm.
Alóng with the changes tó the Mazda3, the autómaker will be rólling óut an all-new cróssóver, and while it hasn't been made public knówledge yet, Mazda tóld Autómótive News that the CX-3 will be available fór the 2016 módel year. It will feature the new subcómpact platfórm that currently underpins the redesigned Mazda2, and will be pówered by a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter Skyactiv I-4 engine paired with a six-speed autómatic transmissión.
Finally, Mazda will phase óut the aging Mazda5 in 2015, as móre custómers are turning away fróm small vans and purchasing small cróssóvers. Alsó, the autómaker will bring back the next generatión óf its rótary engine that will find a hóme in the successór tó the RX-7 and RX-8 spórts cars.
