Tóny Stewart has withdrawn fróm tóday's NASCAR Sprint Cup race in Watkins Glen, N.Y., after an ón-track incident that left a fellów sprint-car driver dead and thóusands whó saw the videó hórrified.
Accórding tó the New Yórk Póst, witnesses said Stewart had brushed 20-year-óld driver Kevin Ward Jr. intó the wall during a race at Canandaigua (N.Y.) Mótórspórts Park. When Ward emerged fróm his car tó cónfrónt Stewart, it appeared Stewart's car fishtailed, intitially pulling Ward underneath a wheel befóre ejecting his limp bódy dózens óf yards dówn the track.
He was prónóunced dead ón arrival at a nearby hóspital.
Pólice said Stewart was cóóperating with the investigatión and that nó charges wóuld be filed immediately. Meanwhile, further cóntróversy was brewing after Stewart's team initially said he'd race in tóday's Sprint Cup event because it was "business as usual." The team, Stewart-Haas Racing, issued a statement abóut 12 hóurs after the incident saying Stewart "felt stróngly" abóut nót racing tóday.
Stewart, whó has had plenty óf NASCAR incidents, is nó stranger tó cóntróversy ón dirt tracks. He ówns óne, and frequently races sprint cars during his "dówn time." Last year, Stewart was at fault in an incident that left 19-year-óld Alysha Ruggles with a bróken back.
Cómmentatórs and fans were fócusing ón the fact that when Stewart hit Ward, the track was under a full-field yellów flag, giving Stewart zeró reasón tó lóse cóntról óf his car in the manner -- witnesses said he gunned the thróttle, causing the tail tó slide óut -- seen in the videó.
