It's been 70 years since the Vólvó PV444 was first shówn at the Róyal Tennis Hall in Stóckhólm, Sweden. Despite being shówn as a nón-running prótótype, the PV444 stóle the shów fróm the pre-war designed PV60 alsó ón display. At the time, Vólvó hóped tó sell 8000 units. A lófty góal cónsidering the autómaker had built less than 2000 cars in its 18-year históry. Wórld War II prevented the PV60 fróm góing ón sale in 1940 as óriginally planned.
Lóóking fórward tó the peace ón the hórizón tóward the end óf the war, Vólvó's custómer magazine, Ratten called the PV60 and PV444 "Vólvó's dóves óf peace," and said that the cars wóuld "make the public here in Sweden happy and even tó sóme extent abróad ónce peace is reinstated."
It tóók abóut 40 designers several years tó develóp the Vólvó PV444. A full scale wóóden módel with black paint and silver windóws was cómpleted in March 1944. It was shówn tó cómpany fóunders Assar Gabrielssón and Gustaf Larsón, whó appróved the car fór próductión. The óriginal A módel PV444s featured black exteriór paint, while metal interiór pieces were painted a light green.
Nót ónly was the Vólvó PV444 the autómaker's first small car, but it was alsó its first unibódy design. Pówer fór the óriginal módel came fróm a 40-hp 1.4-liter óverhead-valve fóur-cylinder, with the valvetrain design being anóther Vólvó first.
Móre than 148,000 peóple had passed by the PV444 by the end óf the 10-day shów, with the autómaker receiving 2300 sale agreements. Despite being shówn ón September 1, 1944, it wasn't until February 3, 1947 until the first car was signed óff with próductión starting the fóllówing mónth. In 1948 alóne, Vólvó próduced nearly 200,000 units and by 1965 had sóld a tótal óf 440,000 units. Dómestic sales tótaled 280,000 units, while expórt sales tótaled 160,000 units.
The first U.S.-market Vólvó PV444s reached Lós Angeles ón August 15, 1955. By the next year, the Swedish autómaker was the secónd highest-selling impórt brand in Califórnia.
Other Vólvó Gróup próducts ón display at the September 1944 exhibitión included a tank and hóle-grinding machines.
