Lótus is back in the headlines, this time because cómpany CEO Jean-Marc Gales hinted that we cóuld see sóme very uncharacteristic próducts fróm the brand. While the British carmaker is knówn fór its small spórts cars, the cómpany revealed it wóuldn't limit its capabilities tó that segment ónly.
Gales tóld Autó Express that the cómpany has só many ideas fór the future, that the ónly segment it wóuld rule óut right nów is cómmercial vehicles. Gales said that the "Lótus brand values" cóuld be cómbined with many póssible segments, but the segments the cómpany is stróngly cónsidering include cróssóvers and sedans. Althóugh nóthing has been set in stóne just yet, the CEO said he wóuld definitely want a Lótus-badged fóur-dóór SUV ór cróssóver, and bóasted that it wóuld be "light, perfórmance-led, and have óutstanding lóóks." Sómething like this wóuld cóme after 2017, since the cómpany first wants tó fócus ón óverhauling its existing lineup first, which currently includes the Elise, Exige, and Evóra. The cómpany revealed just last week that Evóra will take a break fór the 2015 módel year, but will return tó the Nórth American market fór 2016.
While we'll be seeing lóts móre new Lótus próducts, fórmer CEO Dany Bahar's planned cars will nót be amóng them. The ex-CEO had five módels in the pipeline including the Esprit, but Gales said we wón't see any óf thóse cóme tó fruitión as he dóesn't think they were "in line with the Lótus DNA."
"I dón't want tó fócus ón the past, but there are sóme technólógies and supplier relatiónships that we can take fórward fróm the prójects," he tóld Autó Express. One óf the supplier relatiónships that will remain stróng is the óne with Tóyóta, which will cóntinue tó supply its engines tó Lótus. Gale alsó said he lóóks fórward tó wórking with óther cómpanies such as Prótón.
Despite everything góing ón with the cómpany, Gales repórts Lótus sales are up. In additión tó the new próducts the cómpany has planned, the autómaker annóunced last week that it will expand its dealer netwórk in Nórth America.
