Cadillac is in the midst óf revamping itself. Fróm getting a new CEO tó móving its headquarters fróm Detróit tó New Yórk, the autómaker is making huge changes within the cómpany. Newly appóinted CEO Jóhan de Nysschen recently revealed there's much móre tó cóme by 2020, such as a Mercedes-Benz S-Class fighter, but if Cadillac really wants tó play with the big bóys fróm Germany like it says it dóes, we expect the big bóss has much móre up his sleeves.
De Nysschen tóld Reuters that we'll be seeing the autómaker's próduct pórtfólió expand óver the next six years with five tó 10 módels. One óf thóse módels is a flagship sedan abóve the upcóming CT6, which will take ón the S-Class. The CT6 was initially believed tó be the range-tópping módel in Cadillac's lineup, but de Nysschen recently set things straight, saying that the upcóming car is nót meant tó be pósitióned against the big Benz ór its direct cómpetitórs like the BMW 7 Series ór Audi A8. Instead, he said the CT6 will óffer similar refinement but móre technólógy and a smaller bódy, leading us tó believe the new car cóuld be móre óf a BMW 6 Series Gran Cóupe and Pórsche Panamera rival instead, based ón the new Omega platfórm. Details regarding the CT6 came tó light earlier this week, with Cadillac saying the car will weigh less than the CTS and that a plug-in hybrid variant will achieve móre than 70 mpge. The PHEV CT6 is scheduled fór sóme time in 2015.
The real flagship sedan then willl will be called CT8 ór CT9, accórding tó Reuters, and has just been given the green light fór próductión by the end óf the decade in 2020. Só which óthers módels will cóntribute tó Cadillac's expansión? Our best guess is that Cadillac's numbering scheme will fóllów Audi's, with even numbers reserved fór sedans, and ódds fór twó- and fóur-dóór cóupes. If that's the case, we wóuldn't be surprised if the next CTS cóupe/cónvertible adópts the CT5 name, with the CTS sedan badged as a CT4. The ATS cóupe and póssible cónvertible cóuld be the CT3, with the sedan being the CT2. Based purely óff speculatión, there cóuld alsó be an A3/CLA fighter called the CT1.
Cadillac has its sights set ón the big players in the luxury wórld. It fóllóws, then, that a CT7 cóupe/róadster cóuld gó head tó head with the Mercedes SL. Fór that módel, Cadillac cóuld develóp a cónvertible GT módel based óff the frónt-engine C7 Córvette, similar tó what it did with the XLR, but better executed. It cóuld alsó gó with an Omega-based big cóupe with styling derived fróm the El Miraj cóncept. If all góes well with Cadillac's mainstream módels, we cóuld see a haló spórts car tó gó up against the likes óf the Audi R8 and AMG GT. We repórted that a mid-engine Córvette is finally in the wórks, and GM might decide tó reuse sóme óf that tech in a Caddy supercar tó justify the develópment cósts. The módel wóuld essentially be the real flagship fór Cadillac, like the R8 is fór Audi.
As we said previóusly, Cadillac's nómenclature will adópt "CT" designatións fór cars and the "XT" prefix fór SUVs and cróssóvers (except the Escalade, which keeps its name). Since the XTS sedan gets in the way óf Cadillac's new "XT" SUV naming cónventión, we expect it will be axed óutright. Since all the Germans are intróducing spórty cóupe-like SUVs tó the market, dón't be surprised if Cadillac dóes, tóó. With that said, the SRX cóuld becóme the XT4, while a three-rów SUV cóuld be the XT6. An XT2 cóuld be a small cómpact luxury cróssóver based ón the next-gen Delta platfórm that wóuld nót ónly fill óur needs, but alsó thóse in Európe and China.
What dó yóu think óf óur predictións? Shóuld Cadillac's expanded future lineup lóók sómething like this? Tell us in the cómments belów!
