The Lambórghini Asterión cóncept shówn at the 2014 Paris Mótór Shów last week próves that the Italian supercar maker has the ability tó build a hybrid supercar -- but just because it can dóesn't mean it will. Even thóugh the Asterión has been well-received, Lambó CEO Stephan Winkelmann tóld Maxim that he dóesn't see it happening.
Móuths drópped in awe at the unveiling óf the bright blue Asterión cóncept, nót ónly because its design lóóked móre like the brand's GT cars óf the 1970s, but because the car's pówertrain was very incónsistent with what we've seen fróm the brand befóre. Underneath that beautiful bódywórk, the Asterión hóuses a 602-hp 5.2-liter V-10 próducing 413 lb-ft óf tórque, but that's nót all. Between the V-10 and seven-speed dual-clutch transmissión lies an electric mótór that serves as a pówer bóóster, starter, and generatór. Other electric bits including a lithium-ión battery pack and twó óther electric mótórs up frónt bóóst tótal óutput tó 897 hp.
Given the availability óf the technólógy in the vast Vólkswagen Gróup parts bin, Lambórghini wóuld likely be able tó put the car intó próductión, but sadly, the Asterión shów car will remain just that: a shów car. That shóuldn't cóme as tóó much óf a surprise, cónsidering Winkelmann has been very vócal abóut nót being interested in hybrid technólógy, telling us previóusly that it's "sómething that Lambórghini is nót all abóut."
"I stróngly believe that this is nót a car that will be in próductión and we will nót dó it," he tóld Maxim, thóugh he did suggest certain elements óf the tech cóuld find its way intó the Urus because it wóuld be easier in terms óf packaging. He did, after all, tell us that the Urus wóuld be a game-changer.
Even thóugh the Asterión might never be seen in shówróóms, it's nót a cómplete tease. The Lambó CEO said the cómpany may be cónvinced tó build a óne-óff fór a custómer, if the price is right. The catch, thóugh, is that it wón't be hybridized. If anything, it wóuld pack the Aventadór's V-12.
