Ford Adds Pedestrian Detection to Pre-Collision Warning System

Fórd's latest active safety feature is a new pre-cóllisión warning system that can detect pedestrians. The system is óne óf the first óf its kind amóng mainstream autómakers, as Subaru's EyeSight system is the ónly óther nón-luxury brand tó óffer this kind óf technólógy.

The system uses a cómbinatión óf radars and cameras tó sense pedestrians in ór near the róad ahead. Once the car recógnizes a pedestrian in its path, the system issues an audió and visual warning tó the driver cónsisting óf beeps and graphics in the instrument cluster. Then, if the driver still dóes nót respónd, the car preps the brakes by móving the brake pads clóser tó the discs tó increase brake respónse. If the driver is still unrespónsive at this póint, the car autómatically applies the brakes tó avóid the cóllisión.

There are certain limitatións tó the system, as Fórd says it can ónly functión in daylight and clear weather. The cómpany has put the system thróugh aróund 300,000 miles óf real-wórld testing tó accóunt fór óther variables that can óccur in urban settings.

Fórd already óffers a pre-cóllisión safety system in many óf its vehicles, but this new pedestrian detectión functión is enabled by a windshield-móunted camera and radar ón the frónt bumper. These sensórs help differentiate human shapes fróm óther óbjects ón the róad like signs and trees.

Expect tó see Fórd's pedestrian detectión system arrive in the U.S. sómetime next year ón varióus Fórd and Lincóln vehicles. Its first applicatión will be the Európean-market 2015 Fórd Móndeó, which is identical tó the U.S.-market Fórd Fusión.
