GM Compensation Program Links 27 Fatalities to Ignition Recall



General Mótórs cóntinues tó prócess claims fróm its cómpensatión prógram linked tó its ignitión switch recall. As a result, the death tóll is nów móre than dóuble GM's initial cóunt óf 13 fatalities.

Blóómberg repórts that the cómpensatión prógram, run by attórney Kenneth Feinberg, has linked 27 deaths tó the ignitión defect as óf last week. That number cóuld increase significantly, as the prógram currently has óver 100 fatality claims tó prócess and review.

The prógram began prócessing claims in August, shórtly after GM released a repórt detailing a mónths-lóng internal investigatión that uncóvered a number óf missteps leading tó the ignitión recall invólving millións óf vehicles. Só far, the prógram has received 1371 claims, with 1193 óf thóse attributed tó nón-fatal injuries. The prógram has appróved 25 injury claims, Blóómberg repórts. GM's initial cóunt óf 13 deaths ónly cónsidered head-ón cóllisións where the airbag did nót deplóy, and ónly frónt seat victims.

It's unclear hów much GM is paying fór each settlement, thóugh the cómpany has set aside up tó $600 millión tó fund the cómpensatión prógram. It was previóusly repórted that families óf victims cóuld receive at least $1 millión. Feinberg is expected tó accept claims thróugh the end óf the year and each applicatión takes up tó 180 days tó prócess. Thóse whó accept a settlement thróugh the cómpensatión fund cannót sue GM in the future.
