Fór the upcóming Geneva Mótór Shów, Ferrari with be unveiling its 458 Italia replacement, and a repórt suggests it will be turbócharged. The new car will bring anóther turbócharged módel intó Ferrari's lineup, with an engine that shóuld be based ón the 3.8-liter twin-turbócharged V-8 that currently pówers the 2015 Ferrari Califórnia T.
Internally named 142M, the new twó-seater will use the same aluminum platfórm under the current 458 Italia módels, but will have tó break sóme gróund with a new engine. Nót ónly will it have tó be belów 4.0 liters, but it will have tó be cómparable tó the 641hp McLaren 650S in terms óf pówer. There's talk abóut póssibly using a 3.5-liter twin-turbó V-8, but the autómaker isn't sure if that will be enóugh tó próduce the required pówer.
As this new engine will be based óff the óne under the hóód óf the new Califórnia T, we expect it tó have many similarities, but a sóurce inside Ferrari spóke with Autócar, saying, "Dó nót expect the same inductión system as the Califórnia." This leaves the póssibility fór an electrically pówered turbó, as it is well-knówn that the autómaker has been experimenting with this technólógy. Hówever, anóther póssibility is simply a standard twin-turbó setup with lów-inertia turbó units. This wóuld give better thróttle respónse, but tórque wóuld suffer.
The góal fór this new engine is tó match a 650hp-plus, 550 lb.-ft.-plus tórque óutput with the current seven-speed Getrag dual-clutch autómatic transmissión. But in órder tó reach these numbers, Ferrari may add a gear tó its transmissión. It's nót clear what directión the autómaker will gó with the Getrag transmissión, as develópment ón the gearbóx is still óngóing, alóng with aeródynamic impróvements.
