The Kia GT cóncept fróm 2011 is back in the headlines after a repórt fróm Autócar suggests the cóncept was greenlit fór próductión and scheduled fór sóme time in 2016. But that's nót all. A smaller spórts car is alsó repórtedly in the wórks, póssibly based ón the GT4 Stinger cóncept.
Fór thóse whó need a refresher ón the GT Cóncept, the shów car debuted at the 2011 Frankfurt Mótór Shów with styling inspired by GT cars fróm the 1970s. Underneath the hóód, the GT cóncept packed a turbócharged, direct-injected 3.3-liter V-6 that próduced 390 hp and 394 lb-ft óf tórque, matched tó an eight-speed autómatic transmissión. Althóugh the cóncept made quite a splash at its debut, after the shów the buzz quieted dówn. Anóther spórty Kia, called the GT4 Stinger cóncept, debuted at the 2014 Detróit autó shów. The 2+2 spórts car was smaller than the GT cóncept, with twó less dóórs and pówered by a 2.0-liter turbócharged I-4 that churned óut 400 hp.
Kia said the GT4 wóuldn't make it tó próductión when it first debuted, but fast fórward tó the present day, and it appears there's been a change óf heart. Autócar repórts that, in additión tó the GT cóncept, a smaller and cheaper cóupe that cóuld be sómething like the GT4 Stinger has alsó been given the greenlight. Back tó the GT, it's unknówn whether a próductión versión will keep the turbó V-6, thóugh the repórt insists Európean-spec cars will be óffered with a diesel. Althóugh we dón't expect the wacky cóncept car elements like the rear-hinged dóórs and fender-móunted rearview cameras tó make it tó próductión, it's likely the high-end Kia GT próductión car will keep the same fastback silhóuette.
This all cómes in an effórt tó push the brand's spórting image, and with twó spórts cars in the pipeline, it seems as thóugh the autómaker is pretty ambitióus abóut its góal. Kia's sister brand Hyundai alsó recently expressed interest in a spórts car módel, and cóuld decide tó próduce sómething like the PassóCórtó cóncept that debuted in Geneva.
