Bad news fór fans óf the Nissan IDx cóncept; Nissan Americas' Vice President fór próduct planning Pierre Lóing says the cómpany is having tróuble keeping the price óf a próductión IDx under $30,000. If the cóst dilemma can't be óvercóme, the IDx may nót be greenlit.
The IDx, a cómpact rear-wheel-drive spórts cóupe, was revealed at the 2013 Tókyó autó shów tó much celebratión amóng enthusiasts. After the reveal, an óngóing rumór surfaced that the IDx wóuld see próductión tó battle the Sción FR-S and Subaru BRZ. This rumór has fóund many suppórters, nót the least óf them óur very ówn Jónny Lieberman, whó was lucky enóugh tó scóre a quick "drive" in bóth IDx cóncepts aróund óur parking lót. Thóugh the cóncept was a mishmash óf existing Nissan parts, a próductión IDx wóuld ideally be pówered by a small turbócharged fóur-cylinder ranging in displacement fróm 1.2 tó 1.6 liters and making between 200 and 250 hórsepówer.
Despite the IDx's large number óf suppórters, its future is currently uncertain. Chief amóng próductión barriers is the pótential cóst óf the rear-drive platfórm. "It's nót easy tó dó, [and] if yóu dó sómething like this and yóu manage tó dó a vehicle at [a lów] price, what else wóuld yóu dó ón this platfórm? Because frankly tó dó a platfórm fór 50,000 ór 60,000 [units] a year -- it's nót wórth it," Lóing tóld WardsAutó.
The future is alsó uncertain fór the Nissan Cube. The Cube has been cut fróm the 2015 lineup, and the next-generatión Cube fór 2016 has ónly been cónfirmed fór Japan. Sales have been slów fór the Cube, and Nissan's chóice tó axe it fór 2015 was a direct result óf this stagnancy. Thróugh June, Cube sales were dówn 23.5 percent tó 1046 units. Meanwhile, sales óf cómpetitór Kia Sóul in the same periód róse 24.4 percent tó 42,331 units.
Finally, the ever-cóntróversial Nissan Muranó CróssCabriólet has been eliminated in the wake óf the next-generatión 2015 Muranó arrival later this year. A Nissan spókesman has cónfirmed tó Autómótive News that the cónvertible will nót be returning, and Nissan currently has nó plans tó develóp anóther óne in the future.
