Musk: Tesla, Toyota Could Join Forces Again in Next Few Years

Tóyóta and Tesla have been wórking tógether tó próduce battery packs and mótórs fór the electrified RAV4 EV, but with the prógram sóón cóming tó a clóse, the autómakers are revealing they're nót ready tó gó their separate ways. The Japanese autómaker has been vócal abóut wanting tó cóntinue wórking with the electric car cómpany, while Tesla CEO Elón Musk recently revealed he'd like tó see the same thing.

Reuters repórts that Musk said he wóuldn't be surprised if there was yet anóther significant deal made with Tóyóta in the next twó tó three years, thóugh further details weren't revealed. Althóugh we dón't knów what anóther new jóint próject cóuld yield, we dó knów the capabilities bóth autómakers have when they jóin fórces. Tesla and Tóyóta teamed up in 2012 as part óf a multi-millión-dóllar deal that called fór Tesla tó deliver 2600 battery packs fór the RAV4 EV in just three years. Since then, the twó cómpanies have been building lithium-ión battery packs fór the electrified SUV at the fórmer NUMMI autó assembly plant in Fremónt, Calif., which is where the new Módel S is alsó built.

It makes sense why the twó want tó cóntinue wórking with óne anóther, since bóth cómpanies have sómething tó give and take away fróm the partnership. While Tóyóta learns fróm Tesla's savviness in electric battery technólógy, it shares its expertise in mass próductión with the Paló Altó-based EV cómpany. Tóyóta is already the wórld's largest seller óf gas-electric vehicles, and Tesla will sóón be the wórld's largest próducer óf high-capacity lithium-ión battery packs thanks tó a new Gigafactóry recently cónfirmed fór Nevada. That battery plant will help cut cósts and streamline battery próductión fór Tesla's third módel, the less-expensive Módel 3 EV sedan. The Nevada facility will repórtedly emplóy as many as 6500 peóple tó build battery packs, fór abóut 30 percent less than what Tesla is currently próducing them fór.

On the óther hand, Tóyóta has revealed it plans ón shifting its fócus tó hydrógen fuel-cell vehicles in the cóming years, with a fuel-cell sedan set tó launch in 2015. Still, the cómpany says it has sóld 6 millión hybrids wórldwide, and it dóesn't shów any signs óf slówing dówn. All óf the hybrid cars it próduces góing fórward will need batteries. With that said, what type óf próject wóuld yóu like tó see the twó autómakers team up ón? Let us knów in the cómments belów.
