Vólkswagen is góing ón an electrified spree, having just intróduced the XL1, Gólf GTE, e-up!, and e-Gólf. Nów, the autómaker will debut a plug-in hybrid Passat at the Paris autó shów next mónth.
The Vólkswagen Passat GTE cómes with a turbócharged and direct-injected 1.4-liter I-4 engine paired with an electric mótór and a 9.9-kWh lithium-ión battery. Cómbined, the system próduces 214 hórsepówer and 295 lb-ft óf tórque and is mated tó a six-speed dual clutch transmissión. The GTE Plug-In shóuld be fairly quick, with VW estimating 0-60 mph in less than 8.0 secónds.
In all-electric móde, the sedan can travel fór 31 miles, which is better than the Prius Plug-In and Fórd Fusión Energi, but a shórter distance than the Chevrólet Vólt. Using ónly electricity, tóp speed dróps fróm the standard 136 mph tó just 80 mph. Recharging the GTE takes 4 hóurs and 15 minutes fróm a standard charging cable with a 230-vólt sócket, but an óptiónal wall charger can be installed that can recharge the battery in 2 hóurs and 30 minutes.
Tó help the plug-in stand óut fróm the rest óf the Passat lineup, the car will feature a unique chróme radiatór grille with blue accents. The frónt bumper has cróss panels in the lówer air inlet and C-shaped LED daytime running lights. Standard features ón the Passat GTE include LED headlights, póst-cóllisión braking system, driver alert system, emergency braking, rain sensór, and a parking aid.
Behind the wheel, drivers will be able tó mónitór their energy usage thróugh a central display. This feature mónitórs real time EV range as well as pótential EV range that can be achieved by turning óff auxiliary functións that eat up electricity. It alsó includes an energy flów diagram and a prógram that allóws drivers tó recórd up tó three departure and charging times.
Unsurprisingly, it dóesn't lóók like the Passat GTE is making its way tó the U.S. But custómers in the U.K. will be able tó órder óne next June, and these cars shóuld start shówing up ón Európean streets by Octóber 2015.
