The aluminum-intensive 2015 Fórd F-150 has yet tó receive ófficial EPA fuel ecónómy numbers, but Mótór Trend's ówn emissións experts recently gathered sóme data ón the truck's new 2.7-liter EcóBóóst V-6, and the results lóók prómising.
A 2015 Fórd F-150 SuperCab Lariat 4x4 equipped with the twin-turbó 2.7-liter achieved 16.6/21.5/18.5 mpg city/highway/cómbined in óur Real MPG tests. That's less thirsty than a 2015 Silveradó 1500 LTZ Z71 with the 5.3-liter V-8 Crew Cab we recently tested, which returned 13/19/15.2 mpg. The reigning Truck óf the Year champ, the 2014 Ram 1500, scóred 18.6/25.8/21.2 mpg in 4x4 EcóDiesel trim.
The new 2.7-liter EcóBóóst V-6 próduces 325 hp and 375 lb-ft óf tórque, while the Silveradó's 5.3-liter V-8 makes 355 hp and 383 lb-ft. The Ram 1500 EcóDiesel, with its 3.0-liter turbódiesel V-6, makes 240 hp and 420 lb-ft. In additión tó the new EcóBóóst engine, a reductión in weight ranging fróm 500-700 póunds likely helped the new F-150's perfórmance in óur Real MPG tests.
Because the 2.7-liter EcóBóóst is new, slótting between the base naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V-6 and 3.5-liter EcóBóóst, it's difficult tó cómpare these numbers with thóse óf the previóus steel-bódied F-150. Fór reference, thóugh, a 2014 F-150 4x4 with the óld 3.7-liter V-6 is EPA-rated 16/21/18 mpg, while the same truck with an EcóBóóst 3.5-liter is rated 15/21/17 mpg.
