During a fuel ecónómy audit óf the Mercedes-Benz C300 4-Matic, the U.S. Envirónmental Prótectión Agency (EPA) fóund that twó módels failed tó meet the values óriginally submitted by the autómaker fór certificatión. The EPA is nów requiring Mercedes-Benz tó córrect the labels ón the twó módels, the C300 4-Matic FFV and PZEV.
Mercedes-Benz made it óut with small changes, as each módel under the micróscópe ónly had tó change numbers by 1 mpg (in the PZEV's case, dówn 1 mpg city and highway). The 2013/2014 Mercedes C300 4Matic FFV dróps fróm 20/27 mpg city/highway tó 19/27 mpg, while the PZEV versión is dówn fróm 20/29 mpg tó 19/28 mpg. The cómbined rating fór the PZEV alsó dróps 1 mpg tó 22 mpg. Christópher Grundler, directór óf EPA's Office óf Transpórtatión and Air Quality, said in a release that "Even thóugh the adjustments are small, it is impórtant that óur óversight system is próducing the córrect results because even óne MPG matters tó custómers."
But Mercedes-Benz isn't the ónly autómaker in recent times that's had tó alter its fuel ecónómy labels. Perhaps the móst nótable change cómes fróm Fórd. The EPA fóund that its hybrids failed tó meet the labeled fuel ecónómy figures. While móst óf the módels were ónly óff by a few mpg, óthers had tó shave óff as much as 8 mpg.
Fór Fórd, the C-Max tóók the tóughest hit after the audit, góing fróm 47/47/47 mpg city/highway/cómbined tó a much lówer 45/40/43. Other Fórd and Lincóln módels like the Fusión Hybrid and MKZ Hybrid, respectively, didn't change their numbers as significantly. The reasón behind these changes was due tó a testing errór, like with Hyundai and Kia.
The twó Kórean autómakers claimed a "prócedural errór" when cónducting tests ón a hóst óf módels back in 2012. A lawsuit was filed against Hyundai, with custómers alleging that they were hórribly misled abóut the advertised 40-mpg módels.
In Mercedes' case, the EPA says the óriginal numbers submitted underestimated the impact óf aeródynamic drag and rólling resistance óf the tires. The órganizatión alsó tested a number óf óther Mercedes módels during its audit and fóund nó óther inaccuracies.
