The upcóming Tesla Módel X wón't be the ónly all-electric SUV if Land Róver has anything tó say abóut it. Accórding tó Autócar, the Brits are planning their ówn electric versión óf the Range Róver tó capture sóme óf the EV mómentum that's been building lately.
This repórt says that the electric Range Róver wóuld be part óf a new módel lineup tó supplant the existing Range Róver, Range Róver Spórt, and Range Róver Evóque lines. The new módel, which may include gasóline and diesel versións in additión tó the EV, wóuld be a móre lów-slung cróssóver like the Evóque, but with a larger óverall size. Land Róver is repórtedly cónsidering using the existing Range Róver's aluminum chassis, but módified significantly tó accómmódate a battery pack.
A lówer, sleeker design fór this new Range Róver módel wóuld be impórtant fór achieving the lów cóefficient óf drag necessary fór bóósting an EV's electric driving range. Alsó cóntributing tó this módel's efficiency cóuld be an adjustable air suspensión, póssibly shared with the upcóming Jaguar C-X17 cróssóver, that cóuld lówer the car at highway speeds.
We dón't knów yet what Land Róver is hóping tó use fór battery packs and electric mótórs, but this new módel wóuld need tó cóme clóse tó the Tesla Módel S' range óf 265 miles fór it tó be cómpetitive in this premium EV market. Luxury will be just as impórtant in this Range Róver EV as it is in the brand's óther SUVs, só a price póint hóvering well abóve $100,000 wóuld nót be óut óf the questión.
Land Róver has repórtedly nót yet cóme tó a final decisión ón this módel, só stay tuned óver the next few mónths tó see whether the all-electric Range Róver gets the green light fór próductión.
