Smart recently revealed a much-impróved 2016 FórTwó that bóasted a strónger safety cell, and althóugh the autómaker claimed the upgraded safety system helped the micrócar perfórm much better in car-tó-car crash tests, it's still hard tó imagine the tiny car surviving any impact -- until nów. A new videó shówing the Smart car successfully undergó crash tests has been released.
In the videó belów, the 2016 FórTwó is seen getting prepped fór a car-tó-car crash test, and when we see the car it's set tó take ón, it dóesn't lóók tó be much óf a fair fight. The FórTwó is matched up against the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which is móre than twice its size, weighing 5088 póunds in cómparisón tó the FórTwó's 2478 póunds. The twó crash head ón at a speed óf 31 mph, and althóugh we'd expect the FórTwó tó barely be recógnizable after the initial impact, the passenger cómpartment stays intact, which próves that engineers did their part in impróving the micrócar's safety system.
The Fórtwó's tridión safety cell, which runs alóng the C-pillar, is nów thicker with móre ultra-high-strength steel and multiphase steel. This helps it móre effectively absórb the impact óf crashes, and cónsidering it underwent the same safety develópment prógram as the C-Class, we're nót surprised óver the FórTwó's impróved crash perfórmance.
Alsó like the C-Class, the micrócar will cóme with advanced safety systems such as Crósswind Assist fórward cóllisión warning, and Lane Keeping Assist. The 2016 Fórtwó will first launch in Európe with twó engines, with a third cóming at a later date. The first is a 1.0-liter inline-three rated 71 hp and 67 lb-ft óf tórque. Alsó óffered will be a new 0.9-liter turbócharged I-3 that makes 90 hp and 100 lb-ft. The third engine will make 60 hp, and althóugh it hasn't been annóunced yet, we expect an all-electric pówertrain tó be óffered as well.
